The Diploma - what the student has to say
Lloyd Wallis, 6th form student at Sawtry Community College is studying the IT Diploma at the advanced level.

He and his fellow IT Diploma students recently gave a presentation to the ICT committee members on some research they had undertaken as part of the Diploma framework, focussing on Cloud Computing and Blackberry mobile phones.

He is only a few months into the diploma but has already received a great boost with the work had has undertaken.

Speaking of the work he had done so far, Lloyd Wallis said: "The IT Diploma is really interesting, and my work so far with the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce has been very useful. I've already been to visit two local businesses and it was great to actually see how things work and not to be taught within the classroom of 'how a business does it'."

"When you hear the name 'IT Diploma', many people think that you've got to be great with computers, and that a large part of the course is learning about how computers work. But it's an extremely hands-off course for the teachers because the students are told what needs to happen, and then everything needs to be organised and done themselves.

'The diploma is all about being successful in real business situations in any field, and the IT part is just a way of focusing it on a topic that I'm really interested in.'

The IT Diploma is a new course that is the equivalent of 2.5 A levels, which is taken alongside an additional A level, for which Lloyd has chosen maths. The diploma also includes functional skills in maths, English and ICT, which allows students to take the theoretical knowledge acquired at GCSE level and apply it in a practical situation.

Lloyd has learnt a lot of practical skills in just the first few months of the course, and is currently writing about the use of technology in the Cambridge Golf and Conference Centre.
