| Windows 7 - the benefits |
 |
 |
 |
No doubt you saw the hype back in October when Microsoft launched it's latest desktop operating system 'Windows 7' to the market. What, however, does this mean for business? As an IT advisor for Business Link, I am frequently asked whether companies should move to Windows 7 and what the benefits are if they do.
Windows 7 has been available as a beta for quite some time and so I installed it on a test machine and spent some time testing it to address these questions. Some of the key improvements I noted were:
Faster startup, shutdown and running
Better battery life for laptops
Enhanced small workgroup networking features for businesses without a server
Improved security compared with Windows XP
Remote working enhancements making it very easy and seemless to connect to the office when away
Good compatibility with existing hardware and software
Enhanced search facilities making it much easier to find documents and applications
A screen recording feature to enable support departments to set up basic 'how to' guides to show users how to perform certain functions thus reducing support needs.
App locker to more tightly control the applications users can run thus protecting PCs from rogue applications
Location aware printing that senses the network you are connected to (i.e. home or work) and prints to the printer on this network automatically
There were many others, some relating to reducing the total cost of ownership of using Windows 7 through reductions in the support overhead, some relating to security and ease of use.
The ICT sector will be organising a series of events prior to the launch of new products to enable to businesses to understand the business benefits before upgrading. If you would like to receive details first-hand please notify Helen Bosett.
