A 90-minute masterclass in how to reduce the carbon footprint of diesel vehicles by over 80%
In September 2025, Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) implemented a switchover of fuel for their entire operational and pool fleet of 95 vehicles from fossil diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). The rollout followed an 8-month pilot, during which a number of HDC plant and machinery vehicles trialled the use of HVO as an alternative fuel. The council invited the emergency services to join the trial, with both Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue and Cambridgeshire Constabulary choosing to participate and subsequently continuing to fuel a number of their vehicles on HVO.
While other councils across the UK have trialled HVO, few have collaborated with the emergency services and enabled them to run their vehicles on a fuel that offers a reduction of over 80% in carbon emissions.
