Japan working with UK companies

Friday 21 October 2011

A panel of experts presented Japan, the economics, post tsunami, the business opportunities and where to go for support at a recent Chamber event.

Chris Kubicki, Chair of the International Sector had the privilege to introduce Arthur Matsumoto of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Arthur had flown to the UK at our invitation to encourage businesses to engage and work with Japan. Chris also introduced Jun Arima, Director General of the Japanese External Trade Organisation (JETRO).

Over 45 companies attended ‘After the Tsunami – Doing Business in Japan’ seminar which was sponsored by UK Trade and Investment and DHL.

Held at Cambridge’s superb Moeller Centre the delegates were introduced to the current economic situation in Japan by Jun Arima who described the position post tsunami and showed where the business opportunities lie. Presentations also covered understanding the Japanese business culture, how SMEs can establish relationships with Japanese Corporations and the benefits of working with the large network groups.

Dragon’s Den winner, The Wand Company, shared their experience of entering the Japanese market and described how UKTI had supported this. Chamber members Encocam, who has worked in Japan for the last 17 years, described how they had built their business in the country and were now market leaders.

In his closing comments Chris Kubicki said: “We have made a number of introductions tonight, I encourage you to not to just listen, go away and do nothing but to use these contacts to lever your position into the market. This is a time of transformation of the economy, now is the moment - ACT upon it!”
