Government urged to show leadership and inspire

Tuesday 5 July 2016

The UK’s most influential business groups have joined forces to call on the government to demonstrate strong leadership and inspire confidence across the business community.

The British Chambers of Commerce, the Confederation of Business Industry, the Federation of Small Businesses, the Institute of Directors, and EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, have written an open letter urging the government to end the uncertainty facing EU nationals living and working in the UK, and action to progress long-planned infrastructure projects.

John Bridge OBE DL, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said:
“We are delighted to see our national counterparts coming together to form a collective voice in this way. At a time of increasingly certainty, to which the markets are already beginning to react unfavourably, it is essential that businesses of all sizes are given the confidence they need to continue to invest. Only this will secure the jobs and economic wealth upon which the UK’s future is so dependent.

“Decisive leadership has been shown by the Bank of England’s with its decision to temporarily ease bank capital rules, and we hope that this will help to improve liquidity and sustain vital credit flows to businesses and consumers. However the onus to maintain stability can not be placed solely on businesses when the government itself is not doing all it can to inspire confidence.

“We need businesses to invest in growth strategies and create new jobs, but we also need the government to keep its foot on the pedal and continue to invest in infrastructure. That means not shying away from making politically-difficult but economically-crucial decisions on issues such as airport capacity. Such decisions must be made without further delay.”
