First homes for sale for Flagship unveiled

Thursday 12 October 2017

As part of its commitment and drive to diversify its housing portfolio and meet the housing supply shortage, Flagship Group is unveiling its first ever homes for sale and the first scheme of its kind in South Cambridgeshire this week at a special event (Thursday 12 October).

The stylish ‘Eden Rise’ development in Cambourne, near Cambridge comprises 12 new homes to buy and 15 apartments for affordable rent. All 27 properties are aimed at a wide range of people including families and professionals and will be available to buy/rent.

Latest figures show in September 2017, there were a total of 2,207 applicants on the housing register for South Cambridgeshire and Cambourne had the greatest demand for affordable rented accommodation for those with a local connection to Cambourne (113).

The affordable apartments have been named ‘Peter Lakey House’ in honour of Flagship’s current Chairman, who retires at the end of his term in November. These will also be officially unveiled at Thursday’s event.

Chief Executive at Flagship, David McQuade, said: “The naming is a reflection of Peter’s hard work and dedication as a member of our Board for many years. He has been a great influence and instrumental in driving the Group forward as the housing sector experienced some challenging times. We thought it was fitting to celebrate his invaluable contribution in this way.”

The Eden Rise development was made possible due to support from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) which provided £452,000 in funding as Flagship has delivered more affordable properties than the statutory planning requirement.

Tony Tann, Managing Director of Flagship Homes (Development), said: “We are really excited and proud of our first ever new development. The site is in the heart of the community providing high quality homes in a great location.

“With changes in trends in the housing sector we are continually having to think of new ways to subsidise the provision of affordable housing. This includes a more commercial outlook on how we operate as a company. I’m really pleased we have been able to deliver Eden Rise as a fantastic place to live and look forward to having more to celebrate soon.”

Flagship Chairman Peter Lakey said: “It’s been a privilege being at the heart of Flagship for so many years. I’ve seen lots of change and undoubtedly there will be much more to come as the housing sector continues to face different challenges, but I’m delighted to see the first newly built homes for sale come to fruition.”

Positive partnership working with South Cambridgeshire District Council enabled the development to get off the ground.

Cllr Lynda Harford, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “This is the first scheme of its kind in South Cambridgeshire where a housing association has purchased a site and developed it themselves. This innovative approach has allowed them to deliver 55 per cent affordable housing – a higher level than we would normally expect to achieve which is fantastic news. Affordability remains one of the greatest challenges for us in terms of housing, with many households on low to average incomes pushed out of the housing market.”

Guest speakers at the event include the Homes and Communities Agency’s Area Manager, Becky Ashley.

General Manager of the HCA Paul Kitson said: “This is a fantastic development and a good example of how we can work with developers to help them deliver the affordable housing that local people need so much."
