Cambridge Regional College students impress at joint services exercise

Friday 13 July 2018

Students from Cambridge Regional College were put through their paces recently at a former RAF and Army Barracks.

The end-of-year assessment for Public Service students studying at the college took place at Waterbeach, on the edge of the Fens in Cambridgeshire, and saw 183 students march over six miles to reach their destination, carrying equipment and supplies.

The learners were tested both physically and mentally in a series of exercises involving the Police, Marines, Cadets and Ambulance Service.

They were assessed from the moment they arrived, including a timed navigational walk to test their time-keeping skills, as well as uniform and dress code adherence.

The students also took part in drills with paramedics and mock crowd dispersion tactics, closely monitored by trained professionals.

The Level 4 & 5 Public Service students also helped to organise the day as part of their own assessments.

All the students attended a debrief back at Cambridge Regional College the following day to find out how they performed with an awards ceremony to mark their achievements.

Peter Hockey, Team Leader for Sport and Uniform Services at Cambridge Regional College, said: “I would like to thank the joint services involved in these exercises for their continued support - without them the assessment days would not be possible.

“It is so important to introduce young people to the industry and to instil in them the mentality that they get out what they put in. Communication and teamwork are key messages for people working in these services and days like this prepare students for that."
