Tuesday 17 July 2018

Local girl Rachel from Beacon Wealth Management Ltd, has taken on the challenge of a charity touch rugby tournament at the Saracens ground on 26 July in aid of Duchenne UK.

The touch rugby tournament was set up to raise awareness and funds for Duchenne UK, 20 teams of six mixed individuals are meeting at Allianz Park, home of the Saracens on Thursday 26 July 2018 to challenge each other in touch rugby, (Touch rugby refers to games derived from rugby football in which players do not tackle each other but instead touch their opponents using their hands on any part of the body, clothing, or the ball.)

There is a minimum fundraising goal of £2,000 per team. The event is hoping to raise over £40,000 just from the teams alone.

Duchenne is a devastating muscle wasting disease and is the most common genetic killer of children worldwide. There is no treatment or cure, yet! Children will be totally paralysed by their teens and won’t live beyond their 20s. But thanks to recent breakthroughs, Duchenne UK believe they can save them. Their goal is to aim to eradicate Duchenne in 10 years.

Rachel Ashdown commented: “I’ve been roped in to be the token girl, in a charity touch rugby tournament at the Saracens ground in aid of Duchenne UK, which is working to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It’s such a good cause, I couldn’t say no. I just hope they raise enough money to help fund the research to eradicate the disease.”
