New smart home shows the smarter way to live

Wednesday 8 August 2018

A new smart flat has been created in Peterborough to showcase how the latest assistive technology can support independent living.

A range of sensors, devices and alarms have been installed in one of the apartments at Kingfisher Court, Cross Keys Homes' extra care scheme in Stanground, to show how it is possible to create the perfect home environment for older and more vulnerable people. Working in partnership, Cross Keys Homes and Peterborough City Council have created the 'smart' flat to offer members of the public a chance to see the equipment in action.

At the centre of the flat's support system sits Cross Keys Homes' LifeLine service, which allows the results and feedback from a wide selection of monitors to link through to a Control Centre where trained advisers are on hand to offer assistance in an emergency.

Claire Higgins, Chief Executive of Cross Keys Homes, said: "Getting it right as we get older starts with creating the right environment in which to live and keep well. Finding suitable accommodation, like the extra care apartments we provide at Kingfisher Court and Lapwing Apartments, coupled with leading technology that can be installed to meet the needs of every individual is the best way to ensure happy, healthy independence as we get older. This 'smart' flat should help demonstrate how easy it is to use all these gadgets and gizmos as well as the fantastic impact they can make on someone's quality of life."

Trained staff will be on hand to demonstrate the equipment. Professionals are also being encouraged to visit the flat to better understand how people across Peterborough could benefit from the support assistive technology provides.

Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, Peterborough City Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: "Using new technologies in the home may seem a little daunting at first, but they have the potential to greatly improve quality of life for older or more vulnerable people. I would encourage anyone who thinks that they or a loved one could benefit from new technology in the household to get in touch with Cross Keys Homes to see the smart flat in action - it could be a life-changing decision."

The flat is open every Tuesday, 10.00am to 2.00pm and Thursday, 3.00pm - 5.00pm
Members of the public are welcome to pop in for demonstrations and expert advice - no appointment is necessary.
