Peterborough Cathedral Trust hosts major commonwealth event

Thursday 30 August 2018

High Commissioners and their representatives from across the Commonwealth will join local people in a major event Forward Together on Saturday 6 October to celebrate the Commonwealth’s contribution to the Armistice in 1918.

Organised by the Peterborough Cathedral Trust, Forward Together will feature The Band of The Royal Yeomanry, Peterborough Cathedral Choir, massed choirs from Wellingborough.

The programme will include military music from around the Commonwealth and the songs the sailors, soldiers and airmen sang during the First World War. Sixth form students from schools in Northampton, Rutland and Peterborough will read Victoria Cross citations of some of the many Commonwealth service personnel honoured for their bravery.

Participating in the event will be Australian High Commissioner and former Government Minister, George Brandis; and Canadian High Commissioner, Janice Charette, who will read the iconic poem In Flanders Fields written by Canadian soldier, Colonel John McCrae, before he was killed in action.

Peterborough Cathedral Trust Chairman Peter Lawson commented: “This is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the many Commonwealth servicemen whose sacrifice in the First World War helped to bring about the Armistice. This event marks the end of our successful ‘Peterborough 900’ fundraising campaign. It promises to be a moving programme and a tremendous night out, with something for everyone across the age range.”

Tickets are available online here, by phone on 01733 451336 and in person from the Peterborough Information Centre, 41 Bridge Street, Peterborough.
