Employment law seminar tackles the biggest challenges of the modern workplace

Employment status in the modern workplace is becoming an increasing challenge for UK businesses – and one that was not shied away from at a recent city employment law seminar.

With one in five workers in the UK working in conditions where they could lose their jobs suddenly, employment status is a growing modern workplace challenge.

Hosted by Anne Corder Recruitment and Hegarty LLP Solicitors on Tuesday 25 September, the seminar welcomed over 200 delegates from 130 local businesses to the Holiday Inn, Thorpe Wood.

“Reviewing employee and worker status, and the rights associated with various categories of work, is highly relevant to local employers right now,” explained Martin Bloom, partner at Hegarty LLP Solicitors, when discussing the choice of headline subject for this year’s seminar.

“Many businesses use agency workers, zero hour contracts or casual contracts. Recent tribunals, like Uber’s, have flagged up critical questions around each of these and ultimately how an employee is defined in the modern workplace.”

Martin’s briefing advised the seminar’s delegates to watch closely for results of the current government Taylor Review but to also refer to resources from ACAS and the HMRC.

Tim Thompson, partner at Hegarty LLP Solicitors, followed Martin to offer employers advice on navigating demotions and warnings. Along with the seminar’s ever-popular case law update, delegates left with a wealth of valuable employment law advice.

“This is the 21st employment law seminar we’ve had the pleasure of hosting with Hegarty LLP Solicitors – it’s been incredible to see how much the employment landscape has changed in that time,” said Anne Corder.

“Feedback from the HR professionals and employers who joined us has been hugely positive. Along with our ‘bitesized’ seminars, Lunch and Learns, we know that local professionals find this kind of support a huge help.”
