146 students descend on organisations across Newmarket during Dubai Future Champions Education Week

Wednesday 10 October 2018

This week, 146 Year 8 pupils from Newmarket Academy are participating in five days of activities at key organisations across the Home of Horseracing as part of Dubai Future Champions Education Week.

Taking place from Monday 8 to Friday 12 October, students aged 12–13 are currently touring the town discovering more about Newmarket’s heritage and its ties to racing.

The programme aims to engage local children with the unique heritage of the local area in which they live, raise the employment aspirations and expectations of the Academy’s students as well as introduce them to the variety of employment opportunities offered by the racing industry. This initiative has been made possible by the generous support of the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Newmarket Racecourses.

The five-day education programme is structured around the racing industry and throughout this week students are undertaking racing-related tasks and lessons which incorporate topics such as science, geography, history, art, fitness, nutrition, and photography.

In order to engage pupils with the activities, pupils are visiting Newmarket-based industry stakeholders including Newmarket Racecourses, Tattersalls, Rossdales Equine Hospital, the British Racing School, Dalham Hall Stud and the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art. The students will learn about the history and heritage of the town, horse welfare, the life of a racehorse, and will meet the numerous people in a host of different roles that make up the racing industry.

All students will come together at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile on Friday 12 October for day one of the Gold Season highlight, the Dubai Future Champions Festival, to see how everything they learnt comes together in a race meeting, and to soak up the exciting atmosphere.

Cllr Rachel Hood, Mayor of Newmarket, said: “Dubai Future Champions Education Week provides Newmarket Academy students with a unique opportunity to further their learning alongside exploring and better understanding their immediate surroundings.

“Newmarket is a town not only rich in heritage but brimming with opportunity, and by engaging local children throughout the week, they are able to gain a deeper insight into some of the organisations associated with the sport which in turn showcases potential future employment options within the racing industry.

“The contribution made by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has been extremely generous and strongly represents His Highness’s passion for education for young people; and his ongoing commitment to Newmarket and the local community.

“I look forward to the continuation of the valuable programme that is Dubai Future Champions Education Week and would like to acknowledge all the stakeholders involved, as without them, these types of initiatives wouldn’t exist.”
