Cambridge Regional College Catering students keep diners in the dark

Monday 15 October 2018

Students from Cambridge Regional College's Catering department are taking part in a unique event next month, where guests will be dining in the dark!

To mark the launch of Eye Inspire, a project to encourage young people with sight-loss across the UK to follow their goals and aspirations, the Catering students will be devising a two-course menu aimed at tantalising the taste buds of guests who will not be able to see what they are eating.

The quirky Missing Sock venue in Cambridge is hosting the pop-up dining experience evening on Thursday 8 November and guests will take part in a quiz at the end of the evening, with prizes given to those guessing closest to the true menu.

Eye Inspire was founded by Yvette Chivers, a DJ and music professional from Cambridge, who was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disorder Retinitis Pigmentosa 20 years ago. Since then, she has trekked the Himalayas and the Andes, and plans her third peak in 2020 with Kilimanjaro. She has travelled to various places across the world solo, whilst continuing her DJ and electronic music career, always believing that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and keep positive. The mission is to inspire young people with sight loss and to help them build confidence in their own abilities.

Graham Taylor, QTLS Lecturer at Cambridge Regional College, will be heading up the kitchen team on the evening. He said: "It gives me great pleasure to be asked to be involved in such an event. At Cambridge Regional College we have students that come from all over and different walks of life. While doing a presentation to the students, it was humbling to see how many of them wanted to get involved.

“Training the next generation of chefs is a privilege, to be able to give them the skills they need to go on into our industry. Being involved promotes everything we are about in encouraging and educating the students to use their senses regarding taste flavour texture. For our students to be involved is fantastic."

The proceeds from the event will go towards the Eye Inspire project.
