Cambridge Regional College shortlisted for 2018 Business in the Community Award

Cambridge Regional College (CRC), with campuses in Huntingdon and Cambridge, has been recognised by the Huntingdonshire Business Awards for its contribution to projects in the local community.

The College has been shortlisted in the ‘Projects Making a Difference in the Community’ category, a title which the College has won consecutively for at least the last five years.

Both Huntingdon and Cambridge campuses have been extremely active again this year, working with local schools, organisations and charities to provide volunteers, equipment and funding for vital environmental and social projects within their communities.

Projects include carpentry students designing and building a range of wooden items, including a wooden boat, a wooden tee-pee and oversized garden furniture for Alconbury Primary School, all made by recycling wooden pallets from a local business. Brick planters were also made by Construction students, while students from the Supported Learning department built a sensory garden for the school.

In addition, Art and Design students contributed to a project at Woodland Lodge Children’s Home in Huntingdon, consulting with staff at the Lodge to develop, design and create murals which generate greater positivity and wellbeing in three specific areas.

CRC has also supported the community through a number of initiatives, including the Fun Day earlier this year. The event was to thank local residents and businesses for their support and visitors enjoyed a host of activities, including a bucking bronco, slides, giant outdoor games and a range of stalls.

Staff at the College have been dedicated in organising community work and partnerships, encouraging student involvement in a host of charitable events, including donating gifts for the Operation Christmas Child appeal for children affected by war and famine internationally. Health & Social Care students also held fundraising events for the Brain Tumour charity, encouraging young local people to focus on charitable work.

Cambridge Regional College’s involvement in community projects has made a real difference to the lives of local people of all ages but it has also had a hugely beneficial impact on its students, providing them with a maturity and confidence that will stand them in good stead for the transition from education to the workforce.

Cambridge Regional College Deputy Principal, Michelle Dowse, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this year’s Huntingdonshire Business Awards. Our communities matter to us and being recognised for our efforts to build links with people and organisations in our area is a great achievement. Our work in college is to help our students become not just work and career ready but life ready equipping them with skills and attributes to be role model citizens. Being shortlisted for this award not only recognises the success and commitment of our staff at CRC but is also recognition for the great work put in by our students to help others.”
