King’s Ely students on top form at British Rowing Senior Championships

Wednesday 31 October 2018

King’s Ely rowers enjoyed success at the prestigious British Rowing Senior Championships.

Sixth Form students Holly Lancaster and Rebecca Garrett won the Girls’ Under 19 Doubles race at the competition on 20 October. Alex Millard and Will White, also students at King’s Ely Sixth Form, came second in the Boys’ Under 19 Doubles race on the day.

The British Rowing Senior Championships see the top senior rowers from across the country racing each other. It is one of the few events in the UK where Great Britain’s international rowers compete under their club colours.

Head of Rowing at King’s Ely, Craig Ward, said: “Holly and Rebecca rowed incredibly well and achieved an excellent result so early in the season. All of the squad raced well in fact, and have taken away a lot of knowledge racing alongside GB rowing crews and top clubs such as Leander.”

With arguably the best stretch of river for rowing in the country, it is not surprising that King’s Ely has been a strong force in UK rowing for many years. As one of the major sports available to students from Year 8, rowing is enormously popular at King’s Ely. The school’s Boat Club is located on the river just a short walk from school, providing an uninterrupted stretch of water that runs for over 15 miles in each direction, including a five kilometre straight, making it the perfect place to train.
