Cambridge Regional College Student supports Youth Project in Africa

Monday 12 November 2018

A student from Cambridge Regional College has taken her talents to Africa to support a charity aimed at educating children in developing countries.

Surina Agar is a member of the Adobe Project Team Support, an organisation that has successfully rebuilt an old school and orphanage in Uganda and purchased more land to build a second facility.

Aged 43 from Cambridge, Surina is in her second year at Cambridge Regional College, studying for a Level 5 Teaching degree and Level 3 Hairdressing. She is a multi-talented student, having already attained a BTEC first in Art & Design, a BTEC National in Fashion, Level 2 in Beauty, Hairdressing and Barbering, studying at both CRC’s Cambridge and Huntingdon campuses.

Surina travelled to Uganda with a large group of friends who have various skills to offer to the Project. From electricians to carpenters and nurses, they are all looking forward to teaching the local community.

During her stay, she will be teaching the children, but she will also be working alongside renown Ibiza barber Ricky Metcalfe to open a barber shop on the project site. They will be training local people from the community to cut hair and therefore generate an income for the project once they have left.

The Project team faced a daunting task to raise money to fund the trip to buy essential items including books, pencils, toiletries, first aid equipment and tools to help in the restoration of the school. Each member of the team was asked to raise £500 and a fund was set up to encourage donations, at

Surina is looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead. She said: “I have always enjoyed a challenge and my time at Cambridge Regional College has provided me with the skills I require and the confidence to deliver them and to make a difference to the children in Uganda.”
