Greater Anglia recognised for innovative campaigns that have helped passengers

Media officer at Greater Anglia, Lucy Wright, named Outstanding Young Communicator of the Year.

Greater Anglia was recognised at an awards ceremony for campaigns that have helped provide information to passengers and improve performance.

The train operator won a Silver Award for the Best Use of Social Media for its communications of the action staff were taking to help passengers when train services were affected by heavy snow and ice during the Beast from the East in March, at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations ‘Pride’ Awards.

The award recognised the work of Greater Anglia’s media team highlighting the efforts of staff to help rail passengers when the 'Beast from the East' dumped tonnes of snow on rail lines in East Anglia, leading to severe service disruption because some trains couldn't get through the huge drifts and the rails were freezing.

During four days of disruption they posted information and images to help illustrate what was happening, including videos of managers clearing snow off platforms, a technician de-icing train doors and an interview with a driver explaining what it’s like to drive a train in snow.
The posts, which were also shared by the press, helped passengers understand the issues and reassure them that frontline teams would be doing their utmost to get them to where they needed to be.

A photo and video of a snow plough clearing the track through Strumpshaw Fen, Norfolk, with the message that Greater Anglia and Network Rail were working hard to get the lines open, went viral reaching over 500K views on Facebook and 263K views on Twitter.

Greater Anglia Media officer, Lucy Wright was named Outstanding Young Communicator of the Year, receiving the Gold Award. Lucy has worked for the train operator for nearly four years in the busy press office, working on communications campaigns and various corporate social media accounts.

The judges commented: “Lucy is a true professional and shows real commitment to continuing professional development.

“What sets Lucy apart is her contagious energy and passion for the job which engenders trust with colleagues, allowing her to push boundaries and drive innovative communications in her organisation.

“The judges were impressed with Lucy’s ability to rise to the challenge of a difficult communications brief, using research to develop a strategy that delivers compelling outcomes. Lucy is an ambassador for the profession and has a bright future ahead of her.”

Greater Anglia’s Managing Director, Jamie Burles, commented: “We are delighted to receive these accolades which demonstrate how teams across the business have worked together to improve our passengers’ experiences, communicate business developments and improve train performance.

Greater Anglia was also shortlisted in two other categories, integrated campaign of the year and regional campaign of the year for the company’s ill passenger campaign and virtual reality roadshows respectively.
