Local Anglers delight

In a bid to increase engagement, St Neots and District Fish Preservation and Angling Society have completed some major clearance, restoration of access and platform installation works to a section of their owned river facilities.

The land adjacent to Coneygeare Court (PE19 2UL) which is situated between Eynesbury and St. Neots is both a popular walking route for members of the public and a place for Saint Neots Angling Club to frequently conduct recreational and competitive fishing activities.

Unfortunately, after many years of neglect, the destination has become somewhat overgrown with obtrusive and fallen woodland which has inhibited the Groups’ ability to increase membership and attendance, for its offerings.

Courtesy of a £10,000 grant from local construction business Mick George Ltd, the area has benefitted from the removal of shrubbery, foliage and larger obstacles. The decluttering exercise has permitted walkways to be opened up, but more significantly, the opportunity to add eleven fishing platforms on both ‘treasure island’ and the ‘Osiers’.

Alison Currall, of St. Neots and District Fish Preservation and Angling Society said: “The funding from Mick George Ltd has allowed us to transform areas of land that have been unkempt for many years, providing idyllic surroundings for anglers, local communities, visitors and wildlife, to enjoy.”

The changes already seem to be paying dividends with 30 new members already joined the Club.

Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd commented: “This location is an attractive one to a diverse audience, so we’re pleased to have been involved in the upgrades. It is good to see that the Angling Group is already seeing participation grow, and I’m sure that will continue in the future.”
