Series of wins for promising King’s Ely rowers

Friday 7 December 2018

King’s Ely students were on top form at the 2018 Newark Rowing Club Head Race.

King’s Ely Senior rowers competed in the race, which was held in Nottinghamshire over 3,900m on 1 December. The J18 double of William White and Artem Veriuzhskii recorded the fastest double time of the day to win their category. The WJ18 double of Rahera Greatrex and Lucy Whiteside also stormed down the track to set the fastest female double time of the day.

King’s Ely’s success on the day came just a fortnight after students also delivered at the Star Club Head of the River competition in Bedford. Holly Lancaster and Rebecca Garrett won the WJ18 double race, Alex Millard and William White won the J18 double race, and Rahera Greatrex, Holly Burke, Mia Gray and Lucy Whiteside won the WJ18 quad race.

Head of Rowing at King’s Ely, Craig Ward, said: “The Senior squad have come through a tough training block based around Great Britain trials and have developed quickly over a short space of time. Our recent results have been an excellent marker for the season, and I am looking forward to see what further progress they can make. The Boat Club is going from strength to strength and it is exciting to see the Year 9 and 10 rowers looking up to our senior athletes who are performing to a very high standard.”

With arguably the best stretch of river for rowing in the country, it is not surprising that King’s Ely has been a strong force in UK rowing for many years. As one of the major sports available to students from Year 8, rowing is enormously popular at King’s Ely. The school’s Boat Club is located on the river just a short walk from school, providing an uninterrupted stretch of water that runs for over 15 miles in each direction, including a five kilometre straight, making it the perfect place to train.
