Local students design, pitch and run new health awareness event

Cambridge Regional College (CRC) has partnered with a local community café to host a unique event organised by students for the benefit of the local community.

Students studying Level 3 BTEC Travel and Tourism at CRC are tasked with planning and promoting events as part of the curriculum. A group of 15 students were recently split into four teams and asked to devise and propose ideas for a new healthy eating initiative. Staff from Crossways Communitea Café visited the college and took pitches from each group, ‘Dragons Den’ style, before picking one winning idea to be developed into a real campaign.

Students Alithia Elia, Beth Hutchinson, Freya Knightley and Zara Smith came up with the victorious pitch, ‘Grow Your Health’, an event designed to add creativity into meeting the recommended fruit and vegetable guidelines of five-a-day.

In 2017, researchers from the University of Oxford found that over 30,000 deaths per year could be avoided if dietary behaviours improved. The research went on to predict that number could be cut in half if there was an increased consumption of fruit and vegetables in the UK.

‘Grow Your Health’ will be a special one-day event taking place at Crossways Communitea Café on Longstanton Road, Oakington, on Friday 25 January between 10.00am and 4.00pm. Every visitor will have the opportunity to decorate their own pot, plant their own vegetables and choose their own fruit creations and toppings. A voluntary donation can be made on entry, with all proceeds being donated back to the café, which is a not for profit organisation.

Everybody enrolled on the Level 3 Year 2 course at CRC is now involved in preparing the campaign, which will contribute towards each student’s grades. Every aspect, from the design of promotional material to leaflet drops around surrounding villages, has been organised and undertaken by the students themselves.

Elaine Ainge, Team Leader Travel, Business and Computing, said: “We are immensely proud of the students who took part in these pitches and are now working on what promises to be a hugely successful event. Cambridge Regional College’s involvement in projects like this not only makes a difference to the lives of local people but has a hugely beneficial impact on students; providing them with the life skills, maturity and confidence that will stand them in good stead when they transition from education to the world of work.”

‘Grow Your Health’ represents the latest in a line of health-based initiatives CRC has run in recent times. Last summer the college provided students sitting exams with free fruit, donated by local supermarkets, to energise them and to promote healthy food choices.

Cambridge Regional College offers a wide range of full-time, part-time and Higher Education courses from Construction and Engineering to Media and Computing Technologies, with campuses in Huntingdon and Cambridge. It is one of the top 10 colleges in the country and the largest Apprenticeship provider in the Eastern Region.
