University Catering Competition showcases culinary excellence at Cambridge Regional College

Thursday 14 February 2019

The Cambridge University Colleges Competition is a biennial event that was first held in 1961. This year’s competition recently took place at the Cambridge Regional College (CRC) Park restaurant and comprised of 16 classes with 86 competitors from across the Cambridge University Colleges and also featured apprentices from CRC.

The classes included an International Street Food Challenge, Major Chef of the Year, Student Main Course Challenge, Cocktail Making and many more. New additions to the competition for 2019 included a ‘Cook and Serve’ class and skills classes aimed at chefs currently in training at CRC.

Graham Crump, the former Executive Development Chef and Food and Beverage Manager at Warwick University, led the judging panel consisting of 11 leading industry catering professionals. The format for winning the Stewards’ Cup was changed this year from the traditional scoring of the five highest awards combined, to simply the College with the best entry.

The Cook and Serve Team from Clare College, University of Cambridge, were ultimately awarded the Stewards’ Cup for achieving the highest points. Cambridge Regional College apprentices performed impressively throughout the day, particularly Benjamin Brown, who won an award for Best Craft Skills, and Calum Joycelyn who received a certificate of merit.

Graham Taylor, QTLS Lecturer at Cambridge Regional College, believes the use of CRC catering facilities to assess the skills of talented chef’s is testament to the investment the college has made. He said: “Hosting the University Catering Competition is a great honour. We are delighted the competition was a success and could not be prouder of how the CRC students performed. After substantial investment, we now have fantastic facilities on offer which benefits both our students and the wider community.”

Lee Corke, Chair of the Competitions Committee, said: “Thanks to Graham Taylor and his staff at CRC for providing a first-class venue, the Class Sponsors and the Competitions Committee of Rob Clarke, Matt Carter, Stephen Mather, Steve Borbas and Nathan Aldous.”

The University Catering competition is just one of many successes Cambridge Regional College has achieved in recent times. The college also played host to the Passion2Inspire finals last year, hired out their impressive catering facilities to the ARTA Awards, staged a live on-air cooking competition with BBC Radio reporter Ben Stevenson, catered for 1000 people per day at Royal Ascot and saw catering and patisserie lecturer Katie Churchard reach the second heat of Channel 4 cooking show, Bake Off: The Professionals.
