Family who have raised tens of thousands in memory of 19-day-old Tallulah to continue fundraising effort at Huntingdon Bubble Rush

A family’s fundraising in memory of a beloved daughter and sister will continue at the Huntingdon Bubble Rush next month.

Over £31,000 has been raised for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) in memory of Tallulah Irish since she died in 2013, aged just 19 days, following a cerebral infarction that caused severe brain damage.

Mum Keely, dad Curtis and brother Teddy, two at the time, from Royston, spent their final days with Tallulah at EACH’s hospice in Milton.

Keely explained: “When we were able to visit Tallulah the day after she was born, silently we both knew something was very wrong. It’s the hardest day to look back on, trying to read between the lines and moving so quickly between hope, despair and distress at seeing all the tubes and wires. That evening our world collapsed completely around us, when the doctors told us there was nothing they could do for Tallulah. We were in complete shock.

“It was unknown how long she’d survive when the machines were turned off and this is when we were told about EACH and the Milton hospice. Arriving at the hospice, we just didn’t know what to expect, but I remember a feeling of being able to breathe out for the first time in days. Every member of staff made us feel that we were not facing this alone. In the end, Tallulah stayed with us 19 days, 17 of which were spent at Milton where we were able to spend the time together as a whole family, with grandparents, too, in a way that wouldn’t have been possible at home, ensuring Teddy was looked after at a very confusing time for him.

“We had such a short time with Tallulah that could so easily have passed in a state of confusion followed by regret. EACH guided us gently through that period, ensuring we made the most of our time when we were unable to fully comprehend what we were facing.

“Our most treasured memory from our time at Milton was when, after realising we wouldn’t be able to spend Christmas together as a family, the staff arranged for Santa to visit Teddy and Tallulah at the hospice. Seeing our son’s face was priceless. We were given a tree to decorate and hung Christmas lights. The four of us would lay under those lights at night cuddled together. These are memories we’ll have forever.”

Tallulah’s family have since received bereavement support from EACH, attending memory days and family events that have been “a lifeline in the darkest of times”.

Keely said: “We really want people to know how vital the services provided by EACH are to those that need them and that, until they’re needed, it’s so hard to truly understand the extent of what they mean to families. EACH rely heavily on donations to continue their services and the thought of future families not being able to access the support we’ve received is beyond comprehension.”

That is why Keely, Curtis and Teddy, Keely’s brother Jimmy, family friends Charlotte and Alex, and their three daughters, will be taking part in EACH’s Bubble Rush at Huntingdon Racecourse on Sunday 9 June.

Bubble Rush is a 5k fun run with a difference as participants head off amongst a sea of bubbles, before passing four bubble stations where cannons pump out coloured foam to create a four-foot (1.2-metre) deep bubble bath! Runners will go off in two waves, with the first starting at 11.00am and the second at noon.

Bronte Graver, EACH Cambridgeshire Community Fundraiser, said: “Bubble Rush is sure to be a spectacular sight and, with merchandise, catering and other amusements, lots of fun for all involved – we can’t wait!

“We’d like everyone to raise as much money as possible as registration fees help cover the costs of putting on this event. A nice minimum target to set might be £30 as this year is the 30th anniversary of our hospice in Milton.”
