Free workshop to help businesses put an end to plastic waste

March 4, 2020

Businesses looking to reduce their plastic waste can explore innovation and funding opportunities from government and hear best practice from organisations like the National Farmers’ Union, the Environment Agency, VIRIDOR and RECOUP at a free workshop on 17 March in Peterborough.

The workshop is being organised by the UK Circular Plastics Network, part of Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Network, in partnership with the Circular Peterborough team, run by Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough City Council.

A large focus will be on the agricultural and food manufacturing sectors, but any business can attend the event.

Delegates will work together to identify common challenges in reducing single use plastic in their businesses and supply chains. They will also be able to discuss and discover more about current solutions like silage wrap, silage sheets, bale net, greenhouse film, food packaging and labelling.

Circular economy principles will be heavily featured to help organisations eliminate, or find new uses for, waste streams, including single use plastics.

Tom Hennessy, Chief Executive of Opportunity Peterborough, said: “Reducing single use plastics is an absolute priority for our region and we’re proud to be supporting experts from the UK Circular Plastics Network on this event. As much as it’s important for us to look after our local environment, we need to ensure the city’s global footprint is reduced with so many businesses moving goods within the UK and abroad.”

Richard Cooper, Knowledge Transfer Manager at KTN, said: “The issues around plastic waste are equally applicable across all sectors and across the UK, so I am really looking forward to the workshop in Peterborough to understand the challenges local companies face in reducing plastic waste and how innovation funding could help deploy solutions more quickly.”
