Cambridgeshire’s biggest bus operator has officially launched its new business-to-business electric vehicle (EV) charging facility – known as Chargd – with a launch event in Cambridge.
Chargd sees Stagecoach bus depots evolve into commercial EV charging hubs, enabling third‑party fleets to charge vehicles throughout the day from bus depots across the country. The launch marks the first stage of a phased national rollout, with six fully live Stagecoach depots now beginning to offer the Chargd proposition: Cambridge, Oxford, Dover, Stockton, Inverness, and Ash Grove (London).
To meet growing demand from logistics, construction, utilities, and public-sector operators, Stagecoach also announced its expansion plan for the remainder of the year. Coming soon in 2026, an additional nine sites will go live, significantly extending Chargd’s national footprint. These upcoming locations are: Lea Interchange and Bromley in London; Nuneaton and Rugby in the Midlands; Sunderland and Chesterfield in the North; and Kilmarnock, Perth, and Aberdeen in Scotland.
Purpose‑built for commercial use, Chargd will allow access for large vehicles, high‑capacity power supply and rapid‑charging capability. Selected sites also support eHGV charging, reflecting growing demand from logistics, construction and utilities operators.
Delegates at the launch were given an exclusive tour and a live demonstration of the Chargd infrastructure in action, witnessing first-hand how third-party commercial fleets and HGVs can access and use Stagecoach’s high-capacity, rapid-charging hubs.
Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, said: “Hosting the launch event has been a proud moment for our team. Our depots are strategically positioned hubs of high-power energy. By sharing this infrastructure through Chargd, we are not only decarbonising our own bus network but also driving down emissions for local businesses, delivery fleets, and transport operators across the East of England.”
Debra Goodwin, Chief People & Customer Officer at Stagecoach, added: “It was fantastic to welcome our partners, the media, and local business leaders to our depot to show them exactly what Chargd can do. We aren’t just talking about the future of fleet decarbonisation; we are actively delivering it. By opening up our live depots, we are providing UK businesses with the high-capacity, rapid-charging infrastructure they need to transition their fleets with complete confidence.”
Chargd builds upon Stagecoach’s extensive experience in fleet electrification, representing a key pillar in the company’s broader commitment to sustainability, which includes targeting a zero-tailpipe emission bus fleet by 2035.
