Dear fellow Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce member.
Would you be interested in making a difference for those living with, or affected by diabetes in your local community?
Here’s why your support matters:
With 1 in 5 Adults in the UK currently living with diabetes or prediabetes, there aren’t many people who are not connected in some way with Diabetes, whether you have diabetes yourselves, have family/friends, or have work colleagues living with diabetes.
New figures show…
Þ 4.6 million adults in the UK are diagnosed as having diabetes…
Þ About 90% of those are living with type 2 diabetes. 8% have type 1 diabetes, and 2%
have different, rarer types of diabetes…
Þ In addition, 6.3 million people are estimated to be living with prediabetes…
Þ A further 1.3 million people are living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes…
Þ This means more than 12 million adults have either diabetes or prediabetes.
Þ Someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 2 Minutes.
We mustn’t forget the number of children living with diabetes. There are currently more than 35,000 children and young people registered with diabetes just across England and Wales. Most will be living with type 1 diabetes, but sadly we are now seeing more children and young people being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
The cost of diabetes to the NHS is huge too.
With the right information, treatment, and care, people living with diabetes can live long and healthy lives, free from complications. But without it devastating diabetes complications can develop, and every week diabetes leads to 2,990 cases of heart failure, more than 930 strokes and 660 heart attacks, and 184 amputations.
The current cost of diabetes to the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICB area is £160.3 million, this figure is projected to grow to £269.3 million in 2035.
Diabetes UK want to #StopDiabetesForever, and we are asking for your help, to make this dream a reality.
Suggestions on how you could help:
© Nominate Diabetes UK as your chosen charity of the year for 2026/2027
© Hold a one-off fundraising event – Maybe consider World Diabetes Day on November
14th 2025.
© Put Diabetes UK forward for your company’s charity staff vote for 2026/2027
Every pound you raise will make a direct impact for people effected by diabetes
In return for your amazing support, we will provide you with various information to share with your staff/colleagues, including all you will need to know about the different types of diabetes, educate you on how it affects individuals and their families, raise awareness of the things to look out for such as symptoms, risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes, and what you can do to lower the risk of becoming prediabetic. This will have a positive impact on your company and your staff’s health and wellbeing.
Diabetes UK also fund world-class diabetes research. Maybe you would be interested in fundraising to support one of those Research Projects. We currently have three amazing projects underway locally in at the University of Cambridge, that can be adopted, through our Adopt a Project scheme, they are:
© Moving closer to fully closed loop systems for type 1 diabetes
© Changing the brain’s ‘thermostat’ to help blood sugar levels
© How viruses may trigger type 1 diabetes – and how to prevent it
Please contact me if you would like further information on how you can support in any of the ways mentioned above, or any of these local projects.
Our Annual Report for 2024 is now available and is packed with stories of the impact that was made through people’s support and generosity and how together we changed lives. This continued support is crucial to Diabetes UK, as we do not receive any government funding.

I would love the opportunity to discuss ways in which we can work together.
Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this information.
