The Government has launched a statutory consultation on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, running from 5 February to 26 March 2026. This consultation invites residents, businesses and stakeholders to share their views on the future structure of local government in our area.
Under the proposals, the current two-tier system of county, city and district councils would be replaced by new unitary authorities responsible for all local services. Four different models have been submitted by councils for consideration, and the Government will use the consultation responses to inform its final decision later this year.
Participation in this consultation is vital. The way local government is organised will shape key services such as planning, economic development, skills support, business regulation and infrastructure delivery for years to come. Businesses in particular are encouraged to contribute their perspectives on how best to ensure effective decision-making, service delivery and economic growth under a new governance structure.

Local government reorganisation is critically important to a region which is home to two of the fastest growing cities in the country. The process must be concluded without delay, with a clear focus on delivering new structures that provide high quality and cost effective services for residents and businesses. During the process, it is highly important that key services that underpin growth such as planning, are not further disrupted or delayed. The new structures should be developed to deliver in conjunction with key bodies namely Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority and Cambridge Growth Company, with clear roles and responsibilities, preventing duplication. This is a unique opportunity to shape public services which are critical to the growth across our region, which is key to powering UK prosperity. Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce remains committed to working with key stakeholders across the region in order to deliver economic prosperity.
