A major new historical exhibition exploring the life, legacy and enduring fascination of Mary Queen of Scots will open at Peterborough Cathedral from 21st September to 15th November 2026.
Mary Queen of Scots: The Exhibition offers visitors a captivating journey through the dramatic life of one of history’s most iconic and controversial monarchs. Tracing Mary Stuart’s story from her birth in 1542 to her execution in 1587, the exhibition combines original historical artefacts, her possessions, immersive displays and striking visual design to bring her story vividly to life.
Housed within museum-grade display cases and enhanced by atmospheric graphics and period styling, the exhibition presents a compelling narrative of triumph, intrigue and tragedy. Visitors will encounter a rich collection of objects and interpretive materials that illuminate Mary’s life, reign and legacy, one that has captivated audiences for over four centuries.
The exhibition’s arrival at Peterborough Cathedral holds particular historical significance. Following her execution at nearby Fotheringhay Castle, Mary was first laid to rest at the Cathedral in 1587, making it the original burial place of the Scottish queen before her later reinterment at Westminster Abbey.
Dean of Peterborough, The Very Reverend Chris Dalliston said:
‘It’s good, after over 400 years to welcome Mary back to her penultimate resting place, at least in spirit and through some of her possessions. We’re excited to be able to highlight her story, and her links with Peterborough and to offer insights into the life of such an important and controversial figure in British history.’
This deep connection offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience Mary’s story in the very place where her body once lay, adding a powerful sense of place and authenticity to the exhibition. With over 1,300 years of history, the cathedral itself provides a remarkable setting renowned for its medieval architecture, rich heritage and long-standing role as a centre of worship and culture.
