Responding to the latest GDP data, published this morning by the Office for National Statistics, Stuart Morrison, Research Manager at the British Chambers of Commerce said: 

“Growth of 0.4% in the three months to July shows a more resilient economy than expected in the summer months.

“Trade and investment links with the US certainly feel stronger than they did a year ago. The US is the largest inward investor in the UK, our largest individual trading partner and largest purchaser of our services.

Inflation rises again in the Eurozone – should the ECB act to curb transitory inflation?

Inflation in the Eurozone has edged higher again, rising from 2.9% in July to 3.3% in August. This is a cause for concern – reinforcing worries that price pressures are proving more stubborn than policymakers would like and raising concerns that interest rates may have to rise again in the near future.

“The modest fall in July’s ONS retail sales figures although expected after a positive May and June will make uncomfortable reading for the sector, although there will be some comfort in the improved consumer confidence numbers released overnight.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is calling on Chancellor, John Healey, to ‘Back Business, Cut Costs and Deliver Growth’ in his first Budget statement.  

With BCC research showing fragile business confidence, its budget submission asks the Chancellor to give firms the ‘breathing space’ they need to create jobs, invest and grow.
