Peterborough bus driver celebrates 40 years at local operator

Uncategorised30 April 2026

Peterborough’s biggest bus operator, Stagecoach East, is marking the 40th anniversary of a knowledgeable and hard-working member of its team.

Philip Coulson, a driver at Stagecoach’s Peterborough depot, on Lincoln Road, is a popular and knowledgeable colleague, and known for his hard work.

Forty years ago, 1986 saw the opening of the M25 motorway and the Phantom of the Opera in the West End. A newspaper strike began after Rupert Murdoch moved News International operations to Wapping, and Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup Quarter-Final, due to Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal.

Top songs that year included ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ by A-ha, ‘Living Doll’ by Cliff Richard and The Young Ones, ‘The Chicken Song’ by Spitting Image, and ‘The Lady In Red’ by Chris de Burgh.

Top films in 1986 included Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, The Karate Kid Part II, and Aliens.

Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, said: “Phil is well known to our customers after four decades of safely driving them around the area; in many cases, the children he once took to school in his younger days are now waving off their own families at the bus stop in the morning.

“He is an absolute inspiration to young drivers across our region; well known for his friendship, his experience and his knowledge, and he sets a very solid example to our younger drivers. We are extremely proud and grateful for his record and his achievements.”

Meanwhile, Stagecoach has recently announced upgrades to its app, allowing customers to make a savvy choice to save money by buying bundles of DayRider tickets. Under the upgraded scheme, discounts of 10%, 20% and 30% are now available, with tickets valid for up to 12 months.
