Peterborough Cathedral to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week with special service, artwork and illumination

Uncategorised25 September 2026

Peterborough Cathedral will mark Baby Loss Awareness Week with a special service, a dedicated prayer station featuring new artwork, and a week-long illumination of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral’s Baby Loss Awareness Service takes place at 6pm on Sunday 11th October, offering a quiet and supportive space for remembrance, reflection and prayer for anyone affected by the loss of a baby.

Baby Loss Awareness Week, from 9–15th October, provides an opportunity to remember babies lost during pregnancy or infancy, and to acknowledge the experiences of those living with loss.

Throughout the week, the Cathedral will be illuminated in support of the campaign, creating a visible symbol of remembrance and solidarity for families and individuals affected by pregnancy and baby loss.

A dedicated prayer station will also be installed near the tomb of Katharine of Aragon, offering visitors a peaceful place to pause, pray and remember. The location has particular significance as Katharine gave birth to six children, with only her daughter Mary surviving. Her own experience of repeated loss gives the setting an added resonance during Baby Loss Awareness Week.

The prayer station will feature Flutter of Life, a painting by artist Sue Bridge from her A Life in the Womb series. The series explores the bond between mother and baby, and the profound experience of pregnancy and baby loss, drawing in part on the story of former BBC News presenter and Global Health Correspondent Tulip Mazumdar.

Tulip grew up in Peterborough and attended The King’s (The Cathedral) School, Peterborough.

Tulip said:

“After experiencing four pregnancy losses, including the later losses of my sons Rivah and Rae, I know how important it is for families to have their experiences recognised, and their babies remembered. I hope Sue’s beautiful work, in this very special and peaceful setting, can offer a space for reflection and help people affected by baby loss feel a little less alone.”

Sue’s A Life in the Womb series can be viewed on her website, while further information about Baby Loss Awareness Week is available online.

All are warmly welcome at the service, and no booking is required.
