There’s just one week to go until Peterborough Cathedral opens its doors to a magical world of seasonal wonder. From 19th November to 4th December on selected dates, visitors can immerse themselves in The Wonder of Christmas, a celebration of light, music, and community creativity.
From the moment visitors arrive, Cathedral Square will be aglow with guiding lights, snow will drift at the entrance, and the Norman Arch will be framed by a radiant circle of light, welcoming guests on a journey of discovery. Inside, immersive light and sound projections will lead visitors through the Cathedral’s medieval spaces, including a spectacular projection on the Nave ceiling where the guiding star will shine in all its splendor.
Over 30 local schools have decorated papier-mâché reindeer and other animals, while over 40 real Christmas trees, are soon to be decorated by community groups, charities, and local businesses, forming the Cathedral’s inaugural Christmas Tree Festival, open daily and continuing the festivities into the new year. Outside, a giant sleigh and reindeer on the West Lawn offer a perfect photo opportunity, light displays on trees and buildings will illuminate the grounds and festoon lights will guide visitors through the West Front doors.
Pre-booked tickets will be checked at the Norman Arch, and card payments will be accepted on the night, subject to availability (prebooking is advised). The Christmas Tree Festival is included in the ticketed evening event but will also be open during the day during normal opening hours until 7th January, with entry by suggested donation.
“This Christmas, the Cathedral is going to be full of festive magic for everyone to enjoy” said Paul Stainton, Head of Marketing and Communications…. “We can’t wait to welcome families, friends, supporters and the whole community to see the amazing spectacle of The Wonder of Christmas and visit the Christmas Tree Festival. It’s the perfect chance for parents and grandparents to spot their children’s creations, and for everyone to soak up the joy of the season together!”
