Be part of a weekend to remember with Star Shine Walk!

March 3, 2021

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is inviting you to walk in memory of someone special on the weekend of 22 and 23 May. The thirteenth annual Star Shine Walk, sponsored by The Cambridgeshire Care Home, will raise much needed funds for hospice care across Cambridgeshire.

This will be the second outing for Star Shine Walk as a ‘virtual’ event! Participants get to choose the time, location and method to suit them. They are challenged with completing a five, 10 or 20 mile distance over the event weekend, and can chose to walk, skip, wheel, trundle, scoot, walk the dog or even dance their way around: whatever suits them most!  Incredibly in 2020 the memory walk raised more than £40,000 – the equivalent of 67 visits by the Charity’s Hospice at Home team.

Many of the Hospice’s usual fundraising activities have been brought to a halt by the pandemic. For example, the Charity’s five high street shops and new Retail Hub remain closed, as do its Education & Conference Centre and Bistro. In 2021, events like Star Shine Walk are more important than ever in helping to support the overall running costs of the Hospice, which will total £8.56 million this year. More than £4 million of this needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and retail.

Star Shine Walk is an opportunity to raise funds for the Hospice’s essential frontline care, whilst providing the perfect motivation to get active. Teams of colleagues, friends and families can get involved, no matter how far apart they’re based.

Angeline Liles, Events Officer at Arthur rank Hospice Charity, adds: “We have found that people taking part in Star Shine Walk treasure the event as a unique opportunity to actively remember, honour and celebrate the life of someone they love. The beauty of it being a virtual event again this year means anyone can take part wherever in the county, country or world they live. Teams can even set off at the same time if they like! You can also plan your route to take in places of particular significance, or landmarks that are related to special memories.”

One creative approach last year saw a group of friends based in Scotland and Cambridgeshire complete the challenge while on FaceTime with each other!

Another walker who took part in the 2020 event said: “I ran 10 miles on my treadmill at home due to shielding. One sister’s family walked 10 miles around Cambridge and my other sister’s family walked 10 miles around Jersey. Our Mum would be very proud that we celebrated her birthday by raising money for such a wonderful organisation… she spent the last few hours of her life at Arthur Rank Hospice and you were all amazing.”

The Charity’s expert fundraising team will support everyone taking part, all the way from registration through to the finish line. Fun approaches to covering the distance are heartily encouraged, including optional fancy dress!

To receive the early bird discounted registration rate of £15.00 per adult and £13.00 per child (those aged between 10-15 years old on the date of the event), register at arhc.org.uk/starshinewalk before Friday 26 March. Children under 10 are welcome to join for free but won’t receive a Walk Pack. All other registrations received before 16 May will receive a Walk Pack which will include a special edition event t-shirt and other goodies.
