The Cambridge is helping kids’ careers with Maths games

March 22, 2023

Students from local schools across the county will attend a bespoke learning event highlighting maths-based careers, at The Cambridge Building Society this week.

The Society is demonstrating the value of maths skills to 28 Year 8 and 9 students from four local schools – Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology (CAST), Comberton Village College, Northstowe Secondary College, and Sir Harry Smith Community College in Peterborough.

The Cambridge was the first financial institution to partner with Cambridge LaunchPad, a collaboration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) organisations aiming to fill the skills gap in these industries.

Students will be treated to a behind-the-scenes view of its head office in central Cambridge, during a day-long Form the Future event, where they’ll also play a board game designed by Customer Engagement Team Leader, Sophie Banks, and loosely based on Game of Life.

Sophie said: “Financial education is crucially important to all, not just those considering a career in that field, so it felt like something that would prove useful to students of that age.

“I personally had no awareness about managing my finances or what options were really available to me as a career, so wanted to do something fun and engaging to help them think about the future.”

The schools will divide into teams of seven students and have the opportunity to make financial decisions throughout the game. They can use the money to invest in property and investments, such as savings accounts and fixed rate bonds and ISAs, and can decide on careers to pursue to help fund their lifestyle.

Anne Bailey, CEO from Form the Future CIC, said: “Young people get so much out of Cambridge LaunchPad experience days, collaborating with businesses. The behind-the-scenes view of The Cambridge will open their eyes to opportunities available to them. It is fantastic to have access to maths-based careers and help inspire kids to think about their future.”

The winning team will receive prizes including a savings account containing £20.00 with The Cambridge.
