Emma Fletcher – Low Carbon Housing Director, Octopus Energy

Emma is the Low Carbon Housing Director at Octopus Energy. Her career has centred on leading high impact, high innovation projects in real estate, with a particular focus on housing, energy performance and green energy production. Her practical experience includes starting her career in rural surveying and estate management moving into award-winning housing and regeneration developments.

Emma is a passionate advocate for change, community resilience and sustainability solutions for all. She established and led the UK’s first fossil fuel-free district heating scheme in her village, Swaffham Prior. Her work regularly features in trade, national and international press & media.

Paul GaughanFellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors

Paul has over 35 years’ experience within the construction industry with the last 25 years in senior board positions in both commercial and operational roles in Main Contracting organizations within the London Fit Out Sector. He has been involved in setting up and developing niche businesses within the London commercial sector. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. He is also involved with FIS through their Sustainability Leadership Group and with the City of London through their Skills for a Sustainable Skylines Taskforce.

He works as a construction business consultancy and practitioner businesses supporting construction clients, contractors, and specialist contractors as they embrace Net Zero and ESG as a driver for business improvement and differentiation. He firmly aligns with the principles of ‘Rewiring the Economy’ and the need for leadership development to support business in reframing their purpose, strategy, and approach to ensure a sustainable future for all.

He is advocate of collaborative practices and procurement to strengthen key relationships which enhance business value. He is particularly interested in how to lead the decarbonization of construction activities whilst developing the leadership skills and practises to support the supply chain in this area. He is currently on CISL Masters programme with his research focusing on decarbonising construction and how the industry and organisation can embrace the circular economy as they develop their sustainability strategies.

Stuart Searle Managing Director, Practical Energy Solutions

Since taking the bold step in 1993 to move from employee to employer, Stuart Searle, Manging Director of Practical Energy Solutions is a seasoned entrepreneur with a wealth of experience in the design, installation, monitoring and maintenance of commercial energy solutions. As a pioneer of the Solar boom of the early 2000’s the development of additional technologies delivered by his businesses includes Gas, Hydro, ASHP, CHP Units, Solar PV and Solar thermal, Biomass and Waste to Energy plants. The hands on implementation of projects extends beyond the UK to Europe, North America, Africa and China working in conjunction with world leading partners to reduce the environmental impact of Energy generation and use.

Based in the region, from the offices in Peterborough, PES are currently working with businesses from the Manufacturing and Agricultural sectors with the primary focus on decarbonisation by delivering awareness, energy audits and ‘practical’ carbon reduction action plans.

Dave Bendell – Director, Oxford Energy Academies

Dave founded OEA in 2011, offering industry wide training from inexperienced beginners to experienced gas engineers renewing their qualifications.

As a fully qualified gas/plumbing and renewable tutor/assessor, Dave is passionate that at OEA they provide training opportunities to individuals that wish to come into the industry, and promote the need for green skills, whilst supporting businesses locally.

OEA are a leading provider of energy training courses, apprenticeships and assessments. Their fully-equipped Energy Academies offer a wide range of gas, electrical, plumbing, oil and renewable energy skills training, assessment and qualifications. In May 2024, a new centre opened in St Ives with high quality workshop and assessment areas, classrooms and computer facilities.
Gillian BrownSenior Manager, Sustainable Design, Lloyds Banking Group

Gillian is an accomplished Sustainability professional with nearly 20 years experience. She is currently a Senior Manager within Lloyds Banking Group and leads a team in the development of Sustainable solutions and operational sustainability management for their operational property portfolio. Prior to her current role she managed energy and sustainability teams in a number of public sector organisations taking on the challenge of driving down energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions from the built environment.

Gillian is involved in a number of organisations within the sector and is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Energy Managers Association and a Director of the West Dunbartonshire Energy company. In addition to this Gillian volunteers with the Power Futures organisation which provides high school age children the ability to achieve a Scottish qualification in sustainability through a programme of works and mentoring from industry experts.

Ashley Shorey-Mills – Sizewell C Supply Chain

Ashley has spent over 20 years working across Retail and Senior Operations Management, promoting local business and people throughout that time. With vast experience of stakeholder management and a keen focus on business development and relations, Ashley has the drive to ensure Suffolk and regional businesses fully benefit from the monumental opportunity that Sizewell C offers.

Parminder Summon – ARU Peterborough

Parminder is a Professional Doctorate Candidate in Education (EdD) at ARU Peterborough. His research focus is on the application of Transformative Sustainability Education (TSE) in contemporary business management disciplines to enable students to experience holistic, experiential and reflective learning.

Parminder has a keen interest in designing and delivering learning experiences that have a transformative impact on learners. As an economist, he is committed to exploring pluralist economics through his teaching.

As a practitioner, he recognises the theory-practice gap between academia and industry and to collaborative working with companies so that learning extends beyond the classroom.

With over thirty years’ industry experience in the private, public and third sector, he is committed to promoting the vital role companies have in relation to sustainability and the need for businesses to be good for society as well as shareholders. His research to understand the processes of Transformative Sustainability Education will help students get the most from their learning experience.
