Peterborough Cathedral re-opens for public worship and visitors after lockdown

December 2, 2020

Peterborough Cathedral is re-opening to visitors, hosting its socially distanced Christmas Craft and Gift Market and Tower Tours, and opening for ticket reservations for Christmas services as Peterborough moves into Tier 2 Covid restrictions.

The Cathedral’s Christmas Market, rescheduled from November, will take place on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December. Shoppers must book their timed entry in advance so that numbers are controlled and safe distancing can be maintained. The opening times are 10.00am to 5.00pm and 7.00pm and 9.00pm on Friday and 10.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday. Tickets may be booked via peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/143/section.aspx/142/christmas_market_2020.

Tower Tours are planned on selected dates, starting this Saturday 6 December – you combine a Tower Tour with some Christmas Market shopping. Check the website for details peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/towertour. The tours have been carefully redesigned with Covid secure measures in place.

The Cathedral will also re-open to visitors wishing to look around the great building, from Monday 7 December. The new opening times be 10.00am and 4.00pm from Monday to Saturday, and 12.00 noon to 3.00pm on Sundays. Visitors are advised to check before they visit as there are changes to these times on some dates. Details are on the website here peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/opening-times.aspx.

From Sunday 6 December public worship in the Cathedral will resume, including several carol services when you can listen to the choir sing festive favourites (but not join in due to Covid restritions). For many of the Christmas services it is necessary to book a free ticket in advance to ensure effective social distancing. A full list of services and links for booking are on the website here: peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/christmas2020.aspx.

Many of the Christmas Services, including the services on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, will also be live streamed so that those who cannot attend in person can still take part.

The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, said: “We’re delighted that once again we can open the doors of the Cathedral for some of our special events and for our Christmas services. The past year has been challenging for us all and while Christmas won’t feel quite the same as it usually does the chance to meet together, to hear (if not to sing) the familiar carols, words and music and to experience the extraordinary atmosphere of our great building will surely bring comfort and joy to many. And for those who will be unable to join us there will be a full provision of online services too. We look forward to welcoming you!”
