Businesses across Cambridge and the wider Cambridgeshire and Peterborough region will welcome the UK government’s £2.5 billion investment in artificial intelligence and quantum computing, highlighting the critical role of technology in driving the country’s economy.

The funding commitment was announced by Rachel Reeves as part of plans to strengthen the UK’s global competitiveness in emerging technologies and prevent leading companies and talent from relocating overseas.

With its globally recognised research institutions, thriving start-up ecosystem and strong network of innovation clusters, Cambridge and the wider region are already at the forefront of the UK’s technology sector.

Often referred to as ‘Silicon Fen’, the Cambridge innovation cluster is widely recognised as one of the most significant technology ecosystems in the world. The cluster now includes more than 25,000 companies employing over 220,000 people and generating over £50 billion in annual turnover. The Cambridge technology ecosystem has also been valued at around £150 billion, representing a significant share of the UK’s overall tech sector.

The region has developed a global reputation for deep-tech innovation across sectors including artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and digital technologies. Close collaboration between universities, research institutes, investors and industry has helped create hundreds of successful spin-out companies and a strong pipeline of high-growth businesses.

Faye Holland, Chair of the Board at the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, said the government’s announcement reflects the strength of the region’s innovation ecosystem.

“Cambridge and the wider Cambridgeshire and Peterborough region already play a central role in the UK’s global leadership in emerging technologies. This investment recognises the depth of expertise and entrepreneurial activity here, from world-leading research through to pioneering start-ups and scale-ups.

“As these sectors continue to grow, ensuring we have the right skills in place will be essential. Through the Local Skills Improvement Plan, we are working closely with employers and education providers to ensure local people have access to the digital and technical skills needed to support these high-growth industries.”

Charlotte Horobin, Chief Executive of the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, said the region is well placed to benefit from increased investment in AI and quantum technologies.

“Cambridge and the wider region have built an international reputation for innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration. Businesses here are already developing technologies that are transforming industries across the world.

“Investment in areas such as AI and quantum computing presents a significant opportunity for our regional economy. Continued collaboration between government, businesses and education providers will be vital to ensure companies can access the talent, skills and investment they need to grow.”

With artificial intelligence and quantum technologies expected to transform industries ranging from healthcare and advanced manufacturing to energy and cybersecurity, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough region is well positioned to play a leading role in shaping the next generation of global technology innovation.
