Cambridgeshire Chamber urges businesses to shape future of East West Rail in latest consultation
The Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce is encouraging businesses across the region to take part in the latest consultation from East West Railway Company, describing it as a “critical opportunity” to influence one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects.
The consultation outlines major updates to the East West Rail (EWR) project, including faster delivery timelines, up to five trains per hour across the route, and accelerated upgrades to key sections such as the Marston Vale Line.
The proposed railway will ultimately connect Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge, strengthening links across the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor and unlocking new economic opportunities for businesses.
Among the key proposals are a new station at Cambridge East, improved access at Cambridge station, and enhanced connectivity across the region, alongside plans to support future developments such as the Universal resort near Bedford.

Commenting on the consultation, Charlotte Horobin, Chief Executive at the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, said:
“East West Rail has the potential to be transformational for our region’s economy. Improved connectivity between Cambridge and key centres such as Oxford, Milton Keynes and Bedford will make it easier for businesses to access talent, collaborate, and grow.
“These latest proposals show clear progress, particularly around increased service frequency, new stations, and a more phased delivery approach that brings benefits forward sooner.
“However, it is vital that businesses take this opportunity to review the plans and share their views. This is about ensuring the final design works for employers, supports productivity, and strengthens the competitiveness of the Oxford-Cambridge corridor.”
Supporting growth, jobs and investment
The Chamber highlighted that improved east-west connectivity could play a key role in addressing long-standing transport challenges, supporting workforce mobility, and enabling sustainable growth across Cambridgeshire and beyond.
The inclusion of hybrid electric and battery-powered trains also reflects growing recognition of the need to balance economic development with environmental sustainability.
