Still showing up to the other job: Fathers at Mattioli Woods

At Mattioli Woods, we spend every day helping clients plan for the futures of their families. But this Men’s Health Week, which this year falls in the same week as Father’s Day, we wanted to turn that lens inward. We asked six of our own people, spanning five decades, in roles from the training room to the boardroom, to talk about something most of us rarely discuss openly: what the realities of fatherhood actually look like when you’re also building a career. The answers were candid, personal, and at times, surprising. What follows are their stories, in their own words.

Like Father Like Son – Driving Forward The Family Tradition

In the run up to Father’s Day this weekend, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire bus operator, Stagecoach East, has highlighted the work done by a Father and Son to keep the wheels turning for local buses.

Nathan Patrick, now Engineering Manager, joined Stagecoach in 2018, when his Dad, Nick, was already a Shift Fitter, and they have worked together ever since, although Nick has now become a Day Fitter.

No Surprise As Interest Rate Held

No Surprise As Interest Rate Held

Responding to the Bank of England interest rate decision, David Bharier, Head of Research at the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Holding the interest rate at 3.75% is the common-sense call, given yesterday’s better-than-expected inflation data and falling oil prices after the USA and Iran signed a peace deal.

“The cost of a misstep is far higher than it was in the 2022 inflation crisis. Back then, the Bank was tightening into an overheating post-pandemic economy. Today, growth is weak, the labour market is loosening, and the interest rate is already restrictive.

Hiring On Hold

Hiring On Hold

Reacting to the latest labour market data from the ONS, Patrick Milnes, Head of Policy for People and Work at the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“While unemployment fell slightly to 4.9 per cent, the expectation is that it will rise as businesses remain cautious about hiring. Our latest forecast suggests it could reach 5.2 per cent by Christmas as firms struggle with labour cost pressures.

“With vacancies falling and a rise in economic inactivity, this would suggest many businesses are pressing pause on recruitment as uncertainty looms around costs, global headwinds and domestic policies.

Transforming the New Hire Journey: Capytech UK’s End-to-End Onboarding Solution for Cambridge and Peterborough Businesses *Digital & IT, HR & Recruitment*

Businesses across Cambridge and Peterborough are expanding, but in today’s competitive market, securing top talent is only half the battle. The real challenge? Keeping them engaged and productive from the moment they say “yes.” *The Problem* The traditional onboarding process is often disjointed, paper-heavy, and overwhelming.

Far too many organisations rely on a chaotic first week filled with massive policy manuals, generic presentations, and unstructured shadowing. The result? A stressful experience for the new employee, a massive time drain for management, and a significantly increased risk of early staff turnover. When the journey from signing the contract to becoming a fully productive team member is fragmented, businesses lose both time and money.

‘Growth Delivery Test’ Can Turn Ambition into Action

The President of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is calling on policymakers to introduce a ‘growth delivery test’ to help businesses turn ambition into action.

A major new report, co-authored by Andy Haldane, says the UK can break through its decades long economic growth ceiling by focusing on the decisions businesses make every day.

Based on research from the BCC Insights Unit, the report identifies five practical levers for growth: skills, technology adoption, trade, finance and business scaling.
